If you are urban or suburban I think you should own a hand gun first (not less than .38). Cleraly the 10/22 is very common an cheap. The shotgun is a must for CQB and home defense and I can't disagree with Ranger about a large caliber rifle for hunting/offense. I think the important thing is to consider where you live, your level of expertise and how much money you have to spend. In the end....something is better than nothing!
