Higher Education – Trick or Treat?

I know what your thinking… Here we go again, Prepper’s going to rant and rave about having to face the duanting question of all modern parents… How do we put our kids through college?
Yep, we’re going to explore this recent phenomenon that has so many young people pursuing an “Education” that a scarce few will ever use in the sense in which they had originally intended. Let me clarify one more time that it isn’t education that I have the issue with! I believe education is a life long pursuit that every person should commit to! I’ll even tie this subject in with what I truly believe is a plot as sinister as any the .GOV has ever come up with. The age old struggle of one group of people trying to maintain control over another is as alive today as it ever was in history.
As I’ve written about before, a College education is looked at by our current American society as a given, an expected next step after high school. Why is this? It wasn’t many years ago that a scant few, by percentage, students went on to a University… What’s changed? Has our society become so affluent or started bringing home sufficient salaries to pay the price of tuition now when they didn’t have it in years past?
I maintain that most students have no business going on to college! None what so ever… Shocked? Don’t be, let me explain… I agree with the consensus that the time to learn the additional vocational skills that life will require is directly or at least shortly after high school graduation. Considering the push that our children get from society and possibly even their own parents to go on to attend college, it might surprise some that there is more than this single “Higher Education” option!
Let me get right down to business… Those that know me have heard my tirade against the knee jerk reaction of parents to send little Johnny or Janey off to college… I have watched countless families struggle and sacrifice to send their cherished children off to school – “Because that’s what they were suppose to do!” Sorry folks, I just don’t by it! In many of the cases the young person went off to school with little or no firm direction?
Now as much as I love to go spend an hour or three in the gun shop or hardware store drooling over the latest this or that, I do it without running through the place irresponsibly racking up credit card bills. Most families I know have at least some idea of what they can and can’t afford, so they wouldn’t do that either… These same families that wouldn’t think of running down and just dropping a couple hundred or maybe even several thousand dollars on items the store had for sale unless they were the specific things they were in need of but they all to often willingly sign on the dotted line for MANY thousands of dollars so junior can find himself… Hopefully the career path that is eventually chosen is one that required the level of sacrifice the family shouldered?
Have these folks just checked their brains at the door? Maybe, maybe not… I’m not trying to paint every parent that has done this with a broad brush, some career paths do require years at the University. If you or your student have committed to a career that requires this level of educational training – GREAT! I just think that far to many students are attending these schools out of a sense of obligation either to society or often their well meaning parents. Time and time again I have encountered adults with extremely costly University level degrees – anyone care to guess where a popular place to run into these adults? Starbucks Coffee… You got it, there’s a good chance your barista is a college graduate or maybe just as likely – “Only needs a few more credits to finish that degree”…
Do I sound cold and heartless for challenging the societal norm? Well, I for one think we are about to see a lot more threats to what we have all come to think of as our societal norms. Whenever possible I will point out these inconsistencies as I spot them…
