Tough Choices…?

Posted by: | Comments (7)

I was just watching the AMC channel show “The Walking Dead”. I’m not sure that we’ve ever discussed this particular show in the past or not but I’ve found it to be interesting and entertaining! I’ll admit it’s an overly dramatic mind exercise on what a post event may look like… No, I’m not a zombie buff and usually tend to not particularly like the horror genre. This show does fit in with the survival/prepper niche that I can’t help being drawn to it even if we have to suspend reality with the whole zombie thing.

This particular episode was called “Judge, Jury and Executioner” or something like that, it dealt with the tough choices that I think many of us will be sharing if and or when the world we currently know collapses. Tough choices like what to do with otherwise decent people that have gone rouge in the attempt to save themselves and or their families… What will we do with them?

Let’s just imagine that like in the episode I just watched, we have a prisoner… It doesn’t really matter how we got the prisoner but that they were a  threat previously but no longer are, what then? I know, I know, we just shoot them in the head and call it good! Yes, that would be my first inclination too but is that the only choice? I don’t just don’t know? The show brought up the issues that I think in reality we all would probably be facing. If we just start down the path of taking life wholesale, aren’t we just like the people we’re trying to defend against?

Don’t start thinking that I’ve gone soft on ya but I found myself watching a situation that should be cut and dry with a feeling like, it might not be as easy as it sounds on the internet forums. What criteria do we use to decide who lives and dies? It would be really helpful that all threats to our families come in the form of armed men that show up guns blazing and we are then more then justified in blowing them away…

What if we let our guard down and some old woman with 10 children shows up on our doorstep just looking for help? Do we take them in and have our own survival threatened by 11 additional mouths to feed? Do we send them packing and hope they don’t ever come back? What if they inadvertantly give some other group of refugees our location in the course of conversation on the road? What then?

I think you can see where I’m coming from, right? It just isn’t as cut and dry as we might hope it were! When the actual stuff has hit the fan, we will be faced with tough choices that a decent person would never hope to have to make. I’ll do whatever’s necessary to protect my family but the converse of that is so will the other guy… I know all of you have the same inclinations for your selves and families too!

Will any of you guys be able to discard your humanity at the drop of a hat and do the currently unthinkable to some old woman and her wards? I just don’t think you will be able to do that any faster then I would… If we allow ourselves to just not think about things like this aren’t we just leaving a gaping hole in our preparedness plans? I’d really like to hear what some of you have come up with to either avoid or deal with having to make choices like this on some fateful day in the future…

I don’t know why this is so bothersome to me, other then it doesn’t have a clear cut answer of  – do this, then that and we’ve got it covered like so many of the beans, bullets and bandaids solutions! If there are answers out there then I’d really like to hear them… All I’ve been able to come up with is an avoidance strategy. If that old women and her kids just walk right past and don’t turn up my driveway then I don’t have to deal with it. However, she will be turning up someone’s driveway eventually and whoever that person is had better have a plan to deal with it! “Fail to plan, plan to fail!”

Another question that comes to my mind is the “how far is far enough” question? Is it good enough to have the old women not turn up my driveway or should I some how keep her from turning up my road or even turning off the Hwy into my town… The obvious answer would be the further the better but how do we accomplish this task… We’ve been discussing the “Survival Group” topic this week and we’ll be getting back to it here pretty soon, I guess this is kind of in the same vein.

I already shared with everyone that my inclination these last few years has been, live and let live – just leave me out of it… Politicians are going to do what they want and don’t give two sh*ts what I think or how I vote! The federal reserve is having their way with us economically and I’m powerless to stop them so “just leave me the h*ll alone”! I sound like a pouty little girl don’t I? Unfortunately that’s how I feel but I’ll get over it and stand up for what’s right, I always do in the end! It’s frustrating though!

Sorry, I digress, I believe we should all complete this thought exercise as best we can… The truth is that not everyone will be faced with this particular Tough Choice but if it isn’t this one, it will inevitably be something else! What will you do? I just ask you to not take the lazy man’s way out and try to make me believe that the “shoot em all and let God sort em out” route will fix everything! We can all agree that the MZB’s will be shot without hesitation but what if they are just as deadly in the long run but look like grandma when the arrive? What then…

I hope some of you will make some comments on this topic! I would love to hear what you come up with and I know that there’s a lot of you out there that would be well served in thinking this through today rather than tomorrow!

I want to have a chance to answer a few of the questions that have come in having to do with the latest break in over at our BOL… Some posts get more questions than others and these break-ins have generated more then normal. I think that the idea of having our hard earned preps stolen out from under us is a subject that commands just about all preppers attention. We work hard to buy, build or otherwise acquire the things that we all believe the world of tomorrow will require and then they ride off in the back of some son of a sumsuckers truck… Not acceptable!

First, I had one direct comment about selling the BOL and several other emails that indicated that person thought it might be a good idea… While I do understand the logic behind this line of thinking and do respect the individuals that brought it up, we won’t be doing that! I say this with complete conviction because the fact is buying and outfitting a true BOL is far harder and more time consuming then it might first appear. I’ve been working on this particular project, in one fashion or the other, for almost 2 decades! Yes, I’m 40 and so this means almost half my life… I share most everything about my BOL and related projects with you but not all the specific details as I don’t like unexpected visitors. Some of the details that have been left out for OPSEC reasons would be hard to replicate at a new location. Other factors like my families having been accepted into a small community that I don’t even live in full time yet, could only be accomplished through the years I’ve spent nurturing neighborly relationships with those around me. Not even money could buy me the good will of a diverse group of neighbors that often don’t even get along that well amongst themselves much less with a weekender family from the city! It takes lots of time to gain others confidence and frankly I don’t see us having another 20 years to try to embed myself in a new community, even if I could sell the property without losing a huge chunk of equity due to the real estate downturn…

Other emailers had asked for specifics on what all I lost… I guess these posts about my misfortune are kind of like driving past a trainwreck and morbid curiosity is getting the best of the inquirers… The following is THE list that I gave to the Sheriffs office for the police report. I have only removed the name and address, as well as removed the VIN #’s for the quads.

The following are the items that we have determined stolen from our property.

2000 Kawasaki Prairie – VIN # XXXXXXXXXXX       (Red, 4 wheel drive w/ winch on front w/ black plastic racks front and rear trailer hitch)

2003 Kawasaki Bayou – VIN # XXXXXXXXXXX        (Green, 2 wheel drive, gray metal cargo racks on the front and rear w/ trailer hitch)

Zenith DVD Player

19″ LCD Flat Screen TV –      There was a multiple angle adjustable mounting bracket attached to the back of TV for attaching to wall or cabinet. I believe the brand on the TV was Sanyo

Mp3 stereo system –    This was a small stereo system for an IPOD, black in color

Police band scanner – Radio shack brand scanner, handheld black in color

Icom IC T2A Radio – This was a 2 meter handheld Ham radio. Small black radio with a detachable rubber antenna. This would be of limited use without a HAM radio license.

Various Hand tools –   There were multiple 30mm ammunition cans with all sorts of hand tools inside. Manufactures were primarily Craftsman and Proto. These would have included assorted wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers and allen head wrenches. Wood working tools would have included several wood saws, hammers, pry bars and several squares.

Power tools –              (1) 18v Dewalt 1/4 impact driver w/ battery and 110v charger
                                    (2) 9.6v Makita Flashlights with 3 batteries and charger

Power Inverter –          500 watt – I believe this was made by “Statpower” but I can’t recall for sure?

Work Boots -               2 pairs of women’s work/hiking boots. Brand unknown

Utility Box –                2′x2′x4′ utility box, covered in black short nap carpeting. Handles on both ends made of nylon rope material. Constructed of plywood

Ammo Cans -              These cans are or were empty and in addition to the cans mentioned as holding ammunition or other items. (2) 20mm green steel cans, (1) gray US Navy steel ammunition can. The gray can is unique in that it is manufactured with 6 clamps all around the removable top.

“Power Kit”-               20mm Ammo can, painted green and stenciled with the words “Power Kit” in black letter across the detachable lid. Inside the ammo can was a supply of various size rechargeable batteries, I believe they were “Rayovac” brand and had a 110 volt battery charger as well

“Medical Kit”-          20mm Ammo can, painted green and stenciled with the words “Medical Kit” in black letters across the detachable lid. Inside were  various first aid supplies. This would have included bandages of various manufactures, over the counter pain relievers and  remedies.

Firearm Magazines – There were 10 individually plastic wrapped AK-47 magazines. These were all made by Norinco and would either be marked as “Norinco or Chinese”. All of these magazines were being stored inside a 50 caliber green ammunition can.

***All ammunition was stored inside of 30 or 50 caliber, olive drab ammunition cans unless specified otherwise. I will attempt to describe this ammunition’s packaging to the best of my recollection as well.

(2) cases 1200 rounds each 7.62×39 Norinco ammunition in a wooden manufactures crate, inside the crate the ammunition is in the typical cardboard 20 round ammunition boxes. The 20 round boxes are gray or silver and have the Norinco brand markings

(4) cases 1260 rounds each .308, South African manufacture. Each of these cases is a chocolate brown metal case clearly marked as ammunition. Each has a removable matching metal lid. Inside the brown case is 9 individually wrapped plastic cases with 7 20 round boxes inside.

(1) case .223, (1020 rounds) this ammunition was manufactured by Israel munitions Inc. – marked IMI and packaged in 30 round square cardboard boxes. This is unique since the norm would be 20 round boxes. Each round has a green painted tip. These were all packed inside a 50mm ammo can and down inside the can were 20-30 loose rounds of tracer ammo, these have an orange painted tip…

(1) Package .223 – this ammo was South African manufacture and is packaged similarly to the above mentioned .308. Inside the plastic wrapper would be 15 individual cardboard boxes, total of 300 rounds.

.38 –     200 rounds, These were in an ammo can loose, no individual boxes

.45 –     6 (50 round) boxes of Winchester ammunition, boxes were almost entirely white with  minimal factory markings. These packed all together inside a 30mm can.

9×19 – (1) case – 1000 rounds, 20 boxes of federal brand ammunition. I think it was  marked American Eagle, in red boxes of 50

30.06 – 3 boxes, I don’t recall the brand – 2 boxes were full and 1 had 2-3 rounds used and the empty casings should be inside for reloading. I think these were white boxes            with a green manufactures label of some sort on one side.

7.62×39 – 25 boxes of 20, ammunition, Norinco brand.

As you can see by the list there was quite a haul taken this time and we can’t help but feel the sting! We were pleasantly surprised to find out that our homeowners insurance did cover these items and even though the amount of the insurance settlement was no where near enough to replace the stuff, that money did ease the pain to some degree! I also want to remind everyone that this could have been worse, much worse! There were no firearms stolen and I’m very happy about that fact. Not only do I not want to be arming the enemy, I don’t want to have to start filling in gaps in my recently parred down collection.

Another question was about what additional safeguards have been added to assure that more preps don’t walk away again? Well, lets see…? We added an alarm system to the house and primary outbuildings. Additional extra loud exterior sirens were installed that are pointed right at the closest neighbors house to add to the likelihood they will be heard day or night! We have installed additional heavy duty lock mechanisms to the doors of the cargo containers, these were bolted and welded in place. The locks were positioned so as to be almost undefeatable without a cutting torch! Even with a cutting torch, the alarm will sound as soon as the doors are opened or they gain entry to disturb the motion detector!

It will be a long time before I’ll feel comfortable with my own security there again. Nothing gets left out and all the doors get locked tight before dark and or whenever we leave the property. It’s hard to shake the idea that at anytime there could and probably has been someone in the woods watching the house! I find myself doing random shooting skills excersises much more frequently. I’d like to say that I hope to catch someone trespassing but I really don’t want to, what I really do want is to be left alone!

I have to agree with the folks that commented on the fact that its very difficult to successfully secure a property that isn’t occupied full time! This will eventually take care of itself as we will be making that move in the not to distant future. Until then we will be working towards getting the entire 10 acres fenced with at least a typical barbed wire fence. I don’t have delusions that a barbed wire fence will keep these scumbags out but it will be very difficult to make a case that they didn’t know they were trespassing when or if they are ever caught on the property! I have other additions planned to beef up our security and those will be revealed in future posts as I work out the kinks!

Again, thanks to everyone that emailed me with their sympathies! I do hope that nobody else has to experience this but it comes with the territory and as the economy sinks further into the toilet, I would expect that these occurances would increase. Don’t get complacent and wait until after you get hit by these characters to do what you know in the back of your mind needs to be done, do it now!

A Little Housekeeping…

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Let me take just a minute and make a few housekeeping announcements. I wanted to point out that in response to several emails I received about the website not being very well organized, I’ve spent some time getting the catergories in better shape. These are the drop down menus across the top of the page that will help everyone find topics of interest or locate something they read 3 years ago. I’m not completely done revising all the back posts yet but it’s starting to shape up!

Also, I added the feedburner subscription to the website, at the request of a reader and so I want to make sure that all of you feed reader types take advantage of getting updated content from that source. I personally don’t use the feedburner, probably since I have never taken the time to figure out how to effectively use it? It’s there though so all of you that like that service, please check it out. FACEBOOK – I have had many inquiries as to when Preppernation would set up a fan page on facebook? All I can say is that it is coming but since I am not a big facebook user, this is taking me a lot longer then it should… I find new technology a little intimidating but I’ll get it all set sooner then later!

Shelf Reliance has become a sponsor here at Preppernation and as such they receive my full endorsement. It has taken me some time to find a company that I believe in to recommend to my readers for something as important as where they might want to spend their hard earned prepping dollars. Shelf Reliance has earned a name for themselves in our greater prepping community and the Thrive brand food is second to none in quality and taste. I’ve sampled their food here and there over the years but had not done so with reviews in mind. I’ll be taste testing some of their offerings again and begin a series of reviews of my findings. I’ve been very impressed with Randy Greene’s commitment to serve our community here and hope you all will stop over to say hello.

Lastly, I would like to ask you all to help spread the word about preppernation.com, I receive lots of great feedback from all of you and would just like to ask that you share the website with a friend or two. I hope to always be able to add content that is interesting to folks like us but I could use all the help you can give in getting the word out that we’re over here in this back corner of the prepping movement and lifestyle… Thanks in advance to all of you that have already been helping me get the word out!

Keep on preppin’ cause preppin’ is the answer!

Survival Retreats Book Giveaway

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Thanks to everyone that tried to get the free copy of this book! Unfortunately I only have the one copy to hand out and the winning reader has been notified by email that they won. Just to clarify for next time, I just need to be contacted by each reader interested in the book one time, either by comment in that section or by email! I apologize if I didn’t make that clear. I do see almost every comment and email as fast as they come in but don’t often have the ability to get right back to each of you or approve your comments on the spot most of the time. I was very happy with the response from you guys to this type of book review and will have another one coming up probably late next week.

I’m contacted from time to time by authors and companies in the hopes that I will plug their book or product. My answer is always the same, “send me a copy or item to read or try out and then give out to one of my readers! I’ll be happy to do an honest review of the work and publish my opinion on the website”! It’s that simple, if anyone has something that they would like me to review for them, please contact me and we’ll make the proper arrangements!

Readers Questions – Prepper Investing

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Alright, lets examine the whole nickels investment thing a little more… I’ve received several emails and they all have a similar theme, using nickels for investment is a BAD idea! While I do appreciate the feed back and wouldn’t want anyone to agree with me without doing the thought processes for themselves, I have to disagree! Another issue was raised as to the nickels being used for barter after the SHTF and that they would be sub par at best in this situation. This I do agree with, SHTF will require other investments and we’ll cover those in future posts… Today I’d like to do some additional explaining on my point of view for clarity’s sake!

First, investing in nickels was brought up as an alternative to the more traditional long term investments that we all have to choose from currently, such as IRA’s and 401K’s or even the standard mutual fund. Investing in nickels is not all that different then investing in other precious metals except that we have an opportunity to buy at the best price ever offered – face value!

Nickels are far from a sure bet at getting any of us RICH over night but there is still an opportunity that will only be open for what looks like a short time before these coins will go on the books beside the “Junk silver” coins of yesteryear. If anyone had told the American citizens back in 1964 that after the silver coinage (dimes, quarters, halves and dollars) had changed metal composition they would be worth more for their metal value, what do you think would have happened? To be 100% truthful, I wasn’t around in 1964 and the American people very well could have been told about this opportunity, I just have no way to say for sure. I think that if they did know that the old coins would rise in value then there would have been a percentage of people that took advantage of the chance to increase their wealth… just like I’m suggesting today.

Lets say I’m 100% off and the value of the metal in the nickel goes down. Let’s even say it goes to zero and no one wants anything to do with copper and nickel as a metal anymore, at all! What are your nickels worth then?? That’s right they are still worth the same 5 cents that you paid for each coin! So unless my figures are some how off, this is an investment that can not go down in value? At worst it will be a par investment and you have the ability to get all your money back at any time you choose! I’m not sure but I think I have seen both my 401K and IRA balances lose substantial ground over the last few years and they don’t have a hard bottom like the 5 cent face value of a nickel. It is really the alternative investment side of this that I want to stress, not the SHTF potential.

I never intended to have you all believing that after TSHTF, we would be able to eat those many rolls of nickels. Heck, we might not even be able to trade them to someone else for food? Since we are all “preppers” here this investment would qualify as a “prepper investment” but I also did mention that this should only be done after you paid down/off your debts and secured substantial food stores! I have no delusions about what my IRA will be worth after a major disruption of some kind… I know for sure I won’t be able to eat that investment either! Do you see what I’m getting at here?

These nickels, whether you were to buy a few or a truck load, will go up and down in value over the years but will never be worth less then what they were on day one! If my supposition is correct this country is in for some significant inflation as our collective credit card bill comes due over the next few years. Inflation is already starting to ravage our buying power now, what will it look like if it continues at nothing more then the current rate? I just don’t think it’s that much of a stretch to think the metals prices will continue to rise along with everything else! When those prices rise, so will our investment…

I had one comment that asked about how we’re supposed to get our hands on these rolls of nickels? Yes Ranger, come borrow my wheel barrel and head for the bank! In fact if we plan accordingly we might be able to car pool? Just kidding, kind of – Ranger does live close to me and IS welcome to borrow our wheel barrel but it doesn’t really need to be this difficult. Most of us have an account at one bank or another, right? Just go down and talk to your favorite bank teller and see what kind of nickel supply they keep on hand. The reason you need to ask is that the bank will often not keep a large supply of anything in their vaults and will only allow you to purchase a limited quantity at a time depending on what they have in stock and when the armored car next makes its delivery. When I inquired at my local bank branch, they informed me that I would need to pay a dime for each roll I purchased… I inquired further and was told that only retail bank customers could have unlimited rolled change at no charge… My account at that bank was a commercial business account and therefore would be charged.

Armed with that knowledge I headed over to the credit union that has my personal accounts. I asked them what their policy was on large quantities of rolled coinage? They told me that since they roll their own coins in house as their customers deposit them, I was welcome to pretty much as many as I wanted but still would be dependant on their daily supply on hand. They also explained that banks have to pay the federal reserve for the money they have delivered and that’s why they offer coin-star machines to entice their customers to bring their change in and therefore save on those added charges from the FED! I thought that was pretty smart of them to stick their thumb in the FED’s eye like that!

So you can see I am advocating that we purchase these coins for their added value over the long haul due to inflation, not their barter ability! Again, my only intent is to inform you, my readers, of an opportunity that I personally believe will pay a dividend. If I’m wrong, I lose nothing but if I’m right…? I don’t have pie in the sky dreams attached to this idea but if I can possibly double my money, hey lets do it!
