Today, we have another article from James Daken from yester year. I always find Jim just a little bit offensive  but most of the things he says seem to hold true…

GEN X SLACKER

Sometimes the Gods have fun with me. They throw just enough obstacles in my way to be amused at my plight. They tease me with goals I never can quite reach. But in general they pretty much look out for me ( they look after fools, drunks and small children and I haven’t had a drink for years so that tells you where I stand ). I usually follow the correct path, idiotic actions are never as punishing as they could be. One thing I am quite happy with is that I missed being a Baby Boomer by twenty five days. This means I miss out sucking off the Great American Welfare State but it also means I’m not associated with their greed, avarice, and willingness to sell the grandchildren into debt slavery. I am associated with indifferent, lazy slackers, but in my mind this is much more preferable.

Broadly generalizing, Generation Xer’s see the futility in the old school work and reward system and want as little as possible to do with it. What most people see as folks sitting back and wasting their life, we slackers see no point in busting our butts for promises that are not being kept. It was only a very short time in history that Beaver Cleaver America was in existence. A few generations at most. Do as you are told, get good grades, go to college, get a good job, raise a family and then retire in good health to enjoy your Golden Years. I know a lot of us haven’t given up on that dream so much as have had it be out of our reach, but plenty of this generation are smart enough to see a pair of golden handcuffs being ready and steered clear of the trap.

There is nothing wrong with running after the BC dream ( Beaver Cleaver, or Before Cheney ). As long as you realize that it is not guaranteed like it used to be. It is a gamble. I chose long ago not to roll the dice. As a result my stress level is pretty darn low. Yes, there are periods I go through where I am compelled to take a stressful job. As time goes on I arrange my life where I need those jobs less and less. I finely found a wife that doesn’t measure life in dollars ( although her other actions make it hard to stay with her at times ). Just enough to keep a roof over our heads, just fine and dandy. No need to kill yourself early over working a job that pays little more and can end at any time.

Okay, it’s a personal choice. I enjoy having the mental energy left after work to devout to writing. I embrace genteel poverty. I can enjoy life, stop and smell the roses. As long as I adjust my wants to a lower pay grade. I’m not saying it is the best for everyone, just that it could be. As a result of being a slacker, I can also realize a benefit in less stress about money. The less I need to earn the less I have to worry about. No need to worry about losing the house if the wife gets laid off ( she doesn’t even need to work, $7 an hour keeps you in a trailer just fine ). No worrying about car repairs, or car payments. No need to worry about unemployment as much when you can get the same anywhere. I don’t need to worry about maintaining a big income for retiring. I don’t need to worry my job will go over to India or become obsolete by a piece of software.

I have no mortgage, no credit card bills, no car payments, no school loans to pay off. I also have no house, no neat toys, no car when it is 100 or 15 degrees outside, and no challenging work. Nothing in life is free, it is all compromise. If the economy doesn’t crash I’ve lived with less stress and have enjoyed myself. If it does crash I have little to lose comfort wise. The higher they are the farther they have to fall.

END

Another day, another dollar… Well, I should be back on track next week after my incredibly busy last few weeks. I hope! I appreciate the patience that everyone has shown during my time of sporadic blog participation.

Now that we’re getting back into better weather, the projects at the BOL will begin again in earnest and I should have some interesting updates before to long.

Gary North says there’s a political earthquake on the way. So we have economics to be concerned about and maybe we can add some political unrest to list too…

There’s a growing trend of ex-patriotism, the numbers are still relatively small but increasing. This article explores the dangers that America faces if more of our richest citizens were to join their ranks. he biggest question is why wouldn’t rich American leave our country for more friendly shores?

With the unemployment ranks in America swelling to new records almost every month, president Obama has issued over a million new green cards to foreign workers to enter the states and compete for the same few jobs that American workers are looking for???

The Sacramento Bee ran this article on the trend of California workers that are eligible for retirement – doing so. In years past these same workers would have stuck around and soaked up additional pay increases and other perks before making their exit into the retirement ranks. With little for them to look forward to as far as additional pay and benefits they are choosing to get the retirement dollars ASAP… My question is – if California is already or just about to go bankrupt, could the additional retirement checks be the straw that breaks the Californian Camels back?

So now the postal service is moving to a 5 day delivery schedule and apparently there is a very real chance that we, the tax payer’s, will also have to provide a financial bailout too?

Strip Mall vacancies are at all time highs? The article states the case well and I can say that I see a huge amount of commercial space available in my area of Washington State. However, I still see FULL parking lots at the shopping malls… Like I’ve said before, I don’t often venture into those gang ridden, perfume drenched, wallet sucking retail centers but I am curious if there is a large degree of “hanging out” and or “window shopping” going on?

Property tax rebellion is also being predicted in this ABC News article… Mainstream media advertising rebellion? Somethings up but they are speaking the truth about local tax assessments lagging behind the current real estate values…

As you can see in today’s video there are some very controversial content videos openly available on “Youtube”… I am not posting this featured video today as an endorsement of breaking any laws of the land in regards to homemade WMD’s or the unauthorised/unlicensed use of explosives. This video is for entertainment purposes only. I know we have a variety of individuals that read this blog and I thought this video might be interesting to most, so here it is… Enjoy!

You heard the murmurs but couldn’t make out the exact words… The crowd parted as you continued forward to what felt like an appointment you had on the bleachers. It was almost as thought the crowd had needed to see something done to awaken them from a sense of being powerless.

You and your family had been feeling the beginnings of this powerlessness and you had been prepared for this disaster better than 99% of the folks around you. Your wife had been successful in keeping the feelings at bay by finding ways to occupy all of your minds. Many of these people standing around you had no such hope. They had made no preparations for a change in their reality. Even the things you had done over the last several years were looking like they would not be nearly enough. The situation had started small and exciting but it was becoming clear that the solution to this problem would be slow in arriving, if it ever did get resolved!

Without much of anything to say in the way of addressing this crowd you stepped up on the lowest level of this section of bleachers. Your voice sounded weak, at least in your own ears. You made a quick, curt introduction as a member of the neighborhood but left off the specifics of what home and street you lived on. The crowd listened quietly as you apologised for the harsh treatment of the man  but his continued interference was going to do more harm than you dealt out on him. Everyone was called to a meeting and you suggested that it get underway. You were tempted to add that if there were any further disruptions before the speakers were allowed to finish that you wouldn’t go as easy a second time. You decided that it would be better to keep those thoughts to yourself. With out anything further, you stepped down to the ground and moved off to one side indicating that you were going to wait for the speakers to get the show on the road.

As your adrenaline was still working its way out of your system, everything seemed to be moving in a degree of slow motion but you stood your ground. Out of the corner of your eye, you could see the bleeding man and his wife standing behind the crowd. It appeared that everyone was ready to settle down and hear the stranger out. No one seemed to be showing particular interest in you anymore and even the nearly silent private conversations stopped as the man stepped up further on to the bleachers and introduced himself.

As it turned out he was the brother of one of the original residents in this neighborhood. His brother was a retried man that lived a few streets over from you and appeared to be a well respected member of the community, except by the small group of trouble makers. You hadn’t ever met the man’s brother but did know which house was his as it was diligently and carefully landscaped. The story began to unfold and the man explained the events that had let up to his arrival here among us…

This man had been living inside the city limits and with few exceptions the story from his neighborhood was similar to that of this one. The first week saw people begin to run out of food and then fuel. Just as you had seen over the last 24 hours, the stress levels began to elevate. One night the sounds of motorcycles had awakened him and probably everyone else within a mile around. Originally the sounds were just loud but not directly outside his home. As the minutes past the roar grew louder and then around the corner came a dozen bikes. The riders were a motley crew of rough looking men and even a few women. These women weren’t the type an average man would want to tangle with, much less ask out on a date.

The bikers didn’t appear to have arrived on this street randomly. They pulled up in front of a home just a couple of doors away from his. It wasn’t the kind of arrival that would be welcome as these jokers parked not only in the driveway but on the lawn too! All but one of the riders had gotten off the bikes and proceeded to force their way through the front door to the house. He explained that much the same as in your case, he knew few of his neighbors well enough to do more than wave a greeting. However, this house was the home of a friendly young family. A young couple and their 3 children lived there, these bikers didn’t fit with the lifestyle that the couple exhibited. It was pretty clear that these guests weren’t expecting a warm welcome and several weapons were seen as the party entered the home.

The man had hung his head on a couple of occasions during the story that he continued to tell… Since the electricity was out of course the neighbors lights hadn’t come on but he knew there were faces in all the windows up and down that street. As he watched the scene unfold, the sound of muffled gun shots were heard. Next a group of the bikers began to exit the house carrying boxes in their arms. Several groups came out and the contents of these boxes were loaded into saddlebags strapped to the sides of most of the bikes. The single biker that had stayed outside was a short distance up the street in a over watch position. He didn’t say he had seen a firearm but it was clear he remained behind to protect the group from any well wishing neighbors. Sadly, the man continued the story explaining that shamefully not a single man came out of his house to try to help this family…

The bikers had only been in the home for 5-10 minutes and then after packing their bikes were gone as quickly as they had come. The way this story was relayed had kept a strange hush over everyone and the way he described the silence that followed after the bikers left had a very eerie undertone that all present could almost feel for themselves, right then!

His story continued as he came to the conclusion that since no one else was moving, he would go investigate. He dressed quickly and soon found himself carefully approaching the home. As he came to the driveway, he admitted to having second thoughts. He even said that he was afraid of what he would find. Several times he turned to see if anyone else was going to come outside… No one did. He saw curtains drop back down into place as his gaze almost caught the neighbors that he knew were watching. His conscience was already doing a number on him for not coming to these people’s aid. He knew he couldn’t turn back now…

Slowly he approached the front door to the house. The door was open but of course the home was dark inside. He stopped to see if he could hear anything but was only met with a deep silence. As he reached the doorway he noticed that the door jam was broken, it had obviously been forced open. Almost out of habit he reached inside and tried to locate a light switch. After a lifetime of electric lights a flip of a switch away, this habit would die hard! When he was of course rewarded with no response to his flipping of the light switch he stepped inside.

Just a few steps inside the door and there was a new level to the darkness. No moonlight was reaching into the home now and he only knew he was approaching the homes hallway because he was familiar with the floor plan. He again stopped, he had to try to quiet his heavily beating heart so he could hear if there was any other sounds coming from the darkness. Only then did he hear it…

I wanted to talk to you about this article I saw today in the Wall Street Journal… It talks about the closing of another bank, the bank of “Mom and Dad”. I’m not sure when this bank even opened but apparently it had been doing a brisk business over the last couple decades.

Did any of you have an account at the bank of mom and Dad? I know I didn’t… I had parents that loved me and loved me enough to help me develop a sense of self reliance. The way this article was written, it would appear that there are MANY people out and about in our society that have an ongoing account with their parents… It is purely a withdrawal account and is seen by many of them as limitless. The expenditures that the account covered where College Education of course but certainly didn’t stop there! They had line items of pocket money for Johnny while he’s struggling to get his education, struggling with what though was a bit unclear… Travel money, automobiles and down payment assistance for home purchases.

Sounds like a pretty good deal, doesn’t it! This article just reminded me of the trend, I had heard about it over the years but hadn’t been thinking about it as of late. With the economy in the straights that it is, I would have thought that this practice would have been discontinued a year or more ago…

I say it’s high time that people were expected to stand on their own two feet. I think its absurd that a parent would “HELP” their children to such an extent that they would be paying for an adult child to live on their own, ie. college living expenses or down payment assistance for a home purchase? If the individual can’t afford to purchase the home, they shouldn’t be helped into the debt shackles by well meaning parents. The mortgage payments for these homes are just the tip of the iceberg… They have to be appropriately furnished too… what about the utility bills, those are usually higher in a bigger more expensive home. How about homeowners insurance and property taxes, those have to be higher to… Was this really help or just a quicker way to wind up in to much debt?

Who’s signing on those student loans? Is it the student? Usually it’s the parents, the student wouldn’t qualify. I just don’t understand… how is this helpful to the young person? I watch as college students that are friends of our family are brought back home at every opportunity and then provided with spending money and even trips out of state to visit other friends that are also college students? What a life… basically the young person is set up on their own, dorm or other housing, as if they were actually an independent adult. All of the freedom and very few of the responsibilities? I’ve taken to referring to this as the “Disneyland life”… My daughter doesn’t think it’s funny but she also knows better than to think she’ll be receiving any such luxuries after high school!

Don’t get me wrong, I love my child just as much as the next guy and I can see why parents would be tempted to do this. I just believe that if you can’t afford it right now, wait until you can… I remember a saying that my Dad would say periodically when I was growing up – “Wanting is half the fun of getting”… This was usually dragged out of the closet about the time I was wanting something that I couldn’t afford to buy and he had no intentions of “Helping” me purchase!

I recall a section of the book - ”The Millionaire Next Door”, discussing this subject. The author referred to it as “Adult child out patient care”, I think that years ago this was probably the first time I had heard of this being talked about as though it was a frequent occurrence. Having grow up in a modest home and raised by hard working conservative parents, this was a foreign concept! This books reference to this practice was that it wasn’t something that a person with a millionaire’s mindset would be doing.

“Adult out patient care”? As much of a temptation as it might be to help your children have everything their heart desires, don’t do it! My personal view of parenting is that it is my job to create a self supporting adult. In addition to self supporting, it would be nice if I raised my children to be productive members of society. Producing more than they’re taking and prepared to raise the next generation to do the same! Yes, I will do my very best to spoil my grandchildren but in a good way! Spoil them with my time and attention, something that I had a shortage of to give to my daughter.

This concept of continuing to call our college aged adult children – “College Kids”, is doing a disservice to them. As adults they should have been prepared to work hard and achieve the same way that most of us have had to… Yes, when we see our children struggling to make a goal or reach a dream, we as good loving parents would blow in their sails to help them cross the finish line. This is a health way to really assist our kids, instead of doing it for them!

All of this is only my opinion of course and you are free to disagree with me. I would even bet there are a few of my readers that would agree with me on 99% of things but still spoil their adult children with financial gifts. Forgive me but that is sad, stealing your children’s victories of independence… When there is a genuine need, the family should honorably pull together to help each other. I do hope to see the trends of these last few decades fall to the wayside, in favor of getting back to a more multi-generational style of living and cooperation.

Times they are a changing and if those changes include the failure of yet another bank, this one we’ve been discussing, than good! Personal respocibility and independance or if nothing else caring cooperation might just be a great outcome to these strange and sad economic times!
