Mutant Zombie Bikers? Departure…

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Welcome back! I hope you all had a great weekend. I was able to get over to the BOL and spend some time working on a few projects and catch-up with a few of the neighbors. I’ll have a BOL update post later in the week but today we’re going to do another episode in the MZB story. It was my plan to do just a couple of these MZB posts per week but since the stories already in my head, it makes for easy material. We’ll see how it goes and I hope I don’t lose your interest without more variety…

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Morning came early. You woke up with a serious crick in your neck. Everyone had decided to sleep in the family room near the stove. The kids had started out on the floor but one of them eventually found his way up on to your couch with you and that left you sleeping in an awkward position. It wasn’t as though you were expecting to be completely comfortable but this sore neck would assure you would be in a foul mood until it worked itself out.

The boys were mopey and that added to the weight you felt as a father with few options to take care of his family. Your wife was moving around in the kitchen and doing her best to put something together for all of you to eat. She was a good wife and generally had a smile on her face, even during these trying times. She was able to even keep herself looking put together, several of the women that had came to your door looked as though they had given up making any attempt at staying clean and kept. As much as you appreciated the efforts she was taking to stay positive, you could see the toll this situation was taking on her.

All of a sudden you remembered the meeting or gathering that was suppose to take place that afternoon… What could it be? You had your doubts that it would be positive as there hadn’t been any radio transmission received after the end of the first week. You assumed that it was do to the radio stations running out of fuel for the back-up generators. If they hadn’t found a way to get back on line than that means the government hadn’t brought in additional fuel. You concluded that if the stations still had no fuel than the possibilities of food relief arriving were nill. Door to door handmade flyer’s were also a sign of something local at best.

The thought had passed through your head that it might not even be a good idea to attend the meeting. Could it be a ploy to get people out and away from their homes, allowing someone the opportunity to get in and steal any supplies left unattended? This had to be taken into consideration but your curiosity would almost certainly get the better of you. You could leave the wife and boys home to stand watch. You even had the nagging thoughts of your being capable of shooting a hungry burglar yourself, if that time indeed come. How could you expect your wife to do that. On the other hand she might just be the better candidate as the theft of food would put her boys in jeopardy and she would never allow that to happen if she could prevent it, even if that meant shooting someone… This would require some additional thought but you were being summoned to the kitchen to eat whatever she had created from the available food.

Breakfast was oatmeal and one egg each. The oatmeal supply was deep but those eggs were not going to last much longer and then it would be canned meat for protein. That was unless you decided to start setting some traps or sneaking around the wooded areas looking for small animals stupid enough to stick their heads up at a time like this. The idea of drawing attention to yourself with the sounds of even small caliber gunshots wasn’t something you wanted but it would come to that eventually if something didn’t change soon…

After you had all finished your meager morning rations, you decided to bring up the meeting. You explained that it wouldn’t be possible to go and leave the house unprotected, especially now that some of the neighbors had been seen for the low down scoundrels that they must have been all along. Thoughts kept jumping into your mind about the infrequent personal interactions you had with these people over the years. How could you have missed the fact that they saw you as some kind of joke or survivalist freak? Anyway, that wasn’t going to get a decision made about what was actually at hand today, now.

Your wife was disappointed at the idea of not being able to get out and see first hand what was going on. The idea of having some personal interactions of her own was what she was looking for. She conceded that she didn’t know or trust these neighbors anymore than you did but it would be a break in this home-bound monotony that she was craving. She also was adamant that you couldn’t leave the boys alone at the house… This didn’t give you anymore options than you had initially? It was going to have to be that you go alone or no one would be able to go. You were alright with that but all of your desires for additional information would probably win out. You would be sent with instructions from your wife to take good notes and get back quickly to give the in-depth report she would require!

As the morning hours past slowly, you busied yourself with cleaning your handgun and watching to see what was happening outside. A vantage point in the living room was found that allowed the shades to be almost completely closed but you could still see out adequately to make out the street activity. This morning was pretty similar to the other morning since this thing started. People coming and going on the sidewalk. Arm gestures and a few people point at this home or that as their conversations went on. The only thing out of the ordinary was that a truck was sitting in front of a house 6-7 doors up.

You recognised the vehicle as one that did indeed belong to that family. It was only strange to see it out front. It hadn’t been seen in the last week or more. These details weren’t something you had found yourself thinking about, you must have just dismissed these trivial items as part of all the other changes that had taken place. It was possible that the truck had been put in the garage and the door was closed all the time anyway. It didn’t really matter but it did seem to fit with the scene you had been watching this morning that someone was going to be driving it somewhere, the meeting more than likely.

Even though you did have the fuel in your own truck to make the trip without any issue, you hadn’t considered driving. The last thing you wanted to do now was draw any additional attention to yourself and your families condition. The walk would do you good and might allow you to keep your options open if you had to make a break for it. On foot you could run between houses and make it back home fairly quickly but a vehicle could slow you down if someone decided to try and waylay you…

Afternoon came and you checked your gun one last time. It had to be securely holstered, just in case you did end up needing to make a run for it. You made the final instructions to your wife and boys. The typical don’t open the door, no matter what. The shotgun was placed in easy reach of your wife and she was familiar enough with its operation that you felt confident she could hit wherever she aimed, at short distances anyway…

With a final hug and promise to return within 2 hours, no matter what, you were off. You had decided to make your exit via the back door and through the rear gate. Hopefully this was all legit but it might be possible that if someone was watching your house they wouldn’t notice you had even left. As tempting as it was to get to the meeting, some folks would stay home and if you could fool even a few people into thinking you had, all the better. With the gate securely locked again, you started up the street. You made the corner and saw what was waiting just up the street…

Mutant Zombie Bikers? Who’s there?

Posted by: | Comments (1)

We’ll pickup where we left off on this story and have another update on the ugliness brewing in our neighborhood after the grid failed, taking with it the thin veneer of civility amongst many of your neighbors… Let’s see what happens next and who exactly is knocking on your door…

_________________________________________________________________________________

You peer through the peep hole hoping to be able to identify the individual standing on your porch. A tingle runs up your spine as you make the discovery that either no one is there or at least you can’t see anyone. Your not sure who you expected or that anyone would be a welcome sight but this twist of events is actually worse than an unwelcome neighbor begging for food.

Do you open the door or even move a muscle to alert a hidden individual that you are directly on the other side of this door? What circumstance could make this all end happily? You try to make your mind work faster but the thoughts become less clear the harder you try to decide what to do next. The term “vapor lock” keeps running through your head and this, if anything ever was, is a good example of this in action.

You can’t just open the door as if this was just any other day in the neighborhood, or could you? No, that would be unwise but so was leaving someone outside doing who knows what beyond your line of sight… Alright, it finally clicks that if you peek through the curtains in the upstairs bedroom you would have a direct view of the front doorway… Almost instantly you are standing in front of the curtain and begin to pull it to one side ever so carefully. You did your best to not let the curtain wave or rustle to alert anyone watching know you were trying to flank them.

With a gap of close to 2 inches you are finally able to see the front door clearly. However, this is still no better because you still don’t see anyone standing at or near the door. Alright, what could be up? You move to a slightly different vantage point and so you can use the gap you created to see out on to the street. There were a few neighbors out at the sidewalk but they were further up the road and certainly couldn’t have been the culprit that knocked. A moment later you spot a young man come down the walk in front of the house 3 doors up. He gets tback o the sidewalk and than you see him reach the next house and start for their front door… Of course under any other circumstance this wouldn’t be strange but who would send their son out to solicit funds for a school that was now closed or a boy scout camp that wouldn’t be happening, maybe ever again?

As this scene was still soaking into what seemed to be a mind that wasn’t even yours anymore, you see the guy reappear again and move up the street to the next house. He couldn’t have been at the front door of the last house long enough to have even spoken to anyone. What’s he up to? It dawns on you that he may have left something on your door, at least that would fit with the situation you were seeing now…

Before you opened the door, just to satisfy yourself you wouldn’t be opening it to actually find someone standing there now, you again take a look through the peep hole. After confirming that you were safe, you slowly open the door. There wasn’t anything attached to the door but there was a paper stuck under your welcome mat. A portion was showing so it would be seen but not easily blown away. You reach down and pull it out and then quickly glance up and see a similar scene at one of the doors further along the boys route… Paper in hand you duck back inside and secure the door behind you…

Almost as quickly as you are able to see what it was, your wife begins the rapid fire questions… What is it? What’s it say? Who was the boy? Is he leaving this on everyone’s door? What else did you see? You just raised your hand in an attempt to get her to be quite long enough to read this hand written message.

It was an announcement or maybe more of an invitation to a gathering that would be happening tomorrow afternoon. It didn’t give alot of details but it appeared that it was for all of the neighbors to attend and was to take place in the city park a mile up the road. You turned the paper over and saw that it was blank. So this was it, at least until tomorrow. Your wife read it over as well but didn’t catch anything you had missed. Unfortunately, this left you with more questions than answers. You did feel thankful that all this excitement was over something rather trivial and it wasn’t going to be necessary to fight for your supplies, at least not yet!

The remainder of the evening was uneventful. There was a noted increase in the sidewalk activity for the remainder of the day but as much as you would have liked to get a better perspective on what this meeting could be all about, you decided to lay low. Keeping your head down was better than proceeding outside carelessly and possibly have another run in with a neighbor that had been using you as his comic relief over these last few years.

As soon as the sun was all the way down, you set about building a well deserved fire in the woodstove. The family all came together in the family room, seeking the comforting heat and ready to spend a few hours all in the same room. The boys had grown very bored of the situation and other than when forced to work together to preform a chore, like moving that big pile of firewood, they would generally seek the solice of their own rooms.

As you all gathered on the couch or on the floor nearer to the stove, your wife began to read aloud to all of you from a book that she had found on the book shelf. You set about giving your newly retrieved rifle a good cleaning, it didn’t really need it but it did make you feel better having it in your hands again. The pistol you had taken to carrying on your belt was a comfort but this was something all together different. This might be the only gun of it’s kind in your entire neighborhood or possibly any neighborhood in the vicinity. You all could hear the gun shots far off in the distance but the people around here were of the “Rule Following” type and guns were largely an unseen object in society these days. It would be interesting to see how anxious the neighbors would be to rush in and relieve you of your supplies when they saw what they could face when they came over the fence…

Drop Out?

Posted by: | Comments (1)

Drop out? What could I be talking about now…? I saw this ‘Time Magazine’ article and it bares some post time on preppernation.com. Since it’s right in line with what I’ve been talking about here. We are all in a new world, I hesitate to call it a brave new world as we are fully inside the nanny state and bravery isn’t required or condoned. Take a few minutes to read it, it isn’t very long and when I read it I knew it wouldn’t wait until the next “What’s Up” post.

So, what did you think? Sound familiar? I’d say that this idea or concept being floated by a mainstream media magazine like TIME, could only mean that the .gov isn’t as clueless as they might first appear. My main question is with all of this new counter culture activity going on, how will they extract their pound of flesh? We know that they will not be cutting anything substantial from the federal or state budgets, so where will they get enough tax dollars to fund their machine?

We can go round and round about what to expect from the .gov in the way of new taxes and increased fees, etc. but for today I wanted to rail at you all about what a great idea this movement is. I have a master plan to do this exact thing ASAP. However, like most of the rest of you, I have family and business commitments that are keeping me from diving into this head first.

Unless my financial future hits the same brick wall at 100 mph that so many others in my economic sector has, my transition to a “Drop Out” will take a few more years. Some of you that are reading this right now have already hit the brick wall and might be feeling hopeless over the situation. STOP, be hopeful brothers, you’re not alone. As you can see, many of us will be joining you in this new lifestyle of aiming lower and a little closer to home.

Is there anything wrong with this picture? I agree that we have all been trained and therefore have trained our children to stay inside the lines that society has drawn. I certainly wouldn’t encourage my daughter or anyone else to drop out of High School, actually I wouldn’t allow it if she did express the desire but that might very well be my own “OLD WAY” of thinking but I don’t see any benefit to not completing that section of her education in the traditional manner.

As we’ve discussed previously, the almost obligatory stance of society that everyone that graduates high school should go on to college is one tradition that I won’t be helping to further. It’s the ability to earn a living and be independent that I will do my best to assist my daughter in achieving. The old ways of “follow this trail to success” are no longer functioning and we are at the beginning of a new frontier. I for one am excited to be living in such an interesting time, who wouldn’t want to be a settler in a new land that could very well hold opportunities that none of us have even dreamed of yet. While the last few decades have been spent seeing who could acquire the biggest house on the smallest lot, to house the fewest people. The next few decades will hold something different. What it’ll look like for sure, nobody knows.

I was discussing retirement with a favorite Uncle of mine yesterday. He has been working for the same outfit for 25 years and is one of those guys that has a “good” retirement plan. His retirement is through the State of Washington. It’s the typical retirement plan that we’ve talked about before, work so many years and then when you turn 62-68 years old they give you roughly 60% of what you had been making when you stopped. While this isn’t a bad deal, by conventional standards, it seldom works out to be any retirement at all.

I asked my Uncle how long he was planning to work before retirement? He promptly explained that he wasn’t going to retire! What? Yes, that was his plan, keeping working until he was to old to be able to do the job. Yep, this guy has a “good” retirement plan and this is what he has to look forward to. He explained that if he had his home paid off than he MIGHT be able to think about retiring but since he is on a 30 year mortgage with 20 some years remaining – no retirement! Him and my aunt get by well enough now but couldn’t even begin to pay for their life on 60% of what he brings in currently? So what’s a guy to do, other than work himself into the grave?

This article is full of vague ideas, many of which I like! Do something different if you want something different! It is becoming more and more obvious that the traditional paths didn’t work or have ceased working any longer. If you have a lifestyle of WORK, why not be working on the things you choose, instead of punching a time clock? A theme of living off the grid or in non-traditional ways is coming and we have discussed this here but it is becoming more and more prevalent in the mainstream media. This leads me to believe we will see this come to fruition in a big way. It might just be possible that we preppers have been onto something. Relying on a failed bankrupt government has never been a good idea and the sooner we all collectively wake up to the realities of this cultural change the better.

If you couldn’t tell, this is a subject that really gets me charged up. As “preppers” we are always seen as a fringe element but I propose for your consideration that we may be at the spear point of the changes on the horizon. Like the mountain men and trappers that went in to the West ahead of the settlers so many years ago, we may be the first pioneers of a new expansion that is just gaining momentum. The ride is just starting but it promises to be exciting!

Wait, now I not only don’t have to pay off my mortgage loan but the .gov will give me some walking around money to get out quicker? Do I have that right?

USA Today posted that bankruptcies are up and over 110,000 were filed last month alone. If this is going on and I believe it is, what are the American consumers spending at the shopping mall?

We have some tough challenges ahead, anybody think we should be neglecting our infrastructure in favor of building sports arena’s? I think the answer to that would be unanimous if this stuff was going on in your neighborhood… Just wait it will be at the rate we’re going!

Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse… Some states are holding their residents income tax returns… First they steal your money and then they hold it hostage. I think that if this begins to happen in any wide spread way, a storm will be brewing that the states haven’t got enough umbrella’s to go around for!

Mutant Zombie Bikers? Damage Control

Posted by: | Comments (1)

First things first, FAMILY MEETING… Your kids had been taught better than to talk about what you did or did not have in your home. As bad as their breach might have been, yours was worse. However, we had to all get on the same page from this point forward.

A quick review of the precautions that every family should be taking before a disaster event occurs but that were even more important now, afterward, was conducted. From now on, all doors were to remain locked and no excuses would be accepted. The only things that this family had were in and around this house. If we aren’t careful about who has access to them, we might be the one’s doing without. An abbreviated version of the exchange with the neighbor was given to the boys to show them how desperate otherwise good people could act.

Alright, now we all have to get down to business. The boys were given their task and it would be overseen by Mom. The entire pile of firewood was to be brought into the garage and re-stacked neatly. This was to be accomplished via the back door rather than coming around to the front of the house in plain sight of all of the neighbors. Yes, it would be a whole lot more trouble but it wouldn’t do to have everyone see EXACTLY what they had.

While the others were getting this done, you had the chance to get a good inventory done in the garden shed. It would be important to determine what else, if anything, would need to be relocated to the house. The mental picture of medieval towns-people rolling everything up and heading for the protection of the castle at the first sign of an enemy attack, came to mind. Meanwhile, you continued to fight an internal battle with yourself about not over re-acting!

The family wasn’t real thrilled about the job they were given but they did get it done in record time. Your wife had allowed the use of the wheel barrel to get the firewood through the house. She laid out some old broken down cardboard boxes to keep the family room carpet from getting any dirtier than absolutely necessary. You identified a few items that would also need to be moved in from the shed but overall, the items were out there because they didn’t really belong in the house. Fuel for the generator, kerosene heater and a variety of other fuel cans. An assortment of garden tools and the makings for a decent sized garden were stored there too. Those shouldn’t be of a high theft value and the shed will be locked up tight to protect the fuel reserves.  There were also back-up versions of the camping gear that you were currently using inside that could stay. In the back corner, under an old tarp, was a Vietnam era foot locker trunk. This was the real target of your search.

The contents were carefully prepared and stored away over 15 years ago. What lay inside hadn’t seen the light of day since long before the move to this house. You had known the time would eventually come when you would be glad that you had taken the opportunity to make the purchase and also had decided to break the law and not voluntarily turn it over to the authorities a few years back per state law.

The small key had been riding around on your key ring for all these years and slipped into the key-way as though it had been doing it everyday. A flip of your wrist and the lock fell open. As you cracked open the top portion of the trunk an old familiar smell wafted out to meet your nose. It was impossible to mistake – gun oil! You had carefully cleaned and oiled the rifle before sliding it into the special sack designed for long term storage. Even in the low light of the shed, you could see that it was as good as new. Slowly, you broke the seal on the sack and slid the gun out into your waiting hands. It felt good to hold the well designed rifle again. It was of a common design and you had fired many of its kind over the early years of your life before their ownership became very costly and then outright prohibited.

On close inspection everything looked to be in new condition and easily fit back together just as you remembered it should. The entire contents of the trunk looked as though the years had passed lightly. Ammunition and spare magazines, accessories and even a stock of repair parts – all present and accounted for. You never had any intention of going off to fight on some distant battlefield but you would defend your family and it’s ability to survive, if it ever did come to that!

Carefully, you took the rifle and other contents of the trunk into the house. After you checked that the wheel barrel and gloves, etc. were returned to their appointed spots, you felt like you could relax just a little bit. It would be dark soon and that hotly contested firewood would come in handy as you had every intent of building a fire this evening.

Your wife found you and explained that she moved most of the pantry items out of the kitchen and down into the garage storage area. She explained that if someone were to gain access to the home they would certainly be looking in the kitchen first. Food being the primary concern voiced out on the street corner. It would be a little less convenient for her to prepare the meals but she could cope.

The conversation surrounding the new pantry arrangements was wrapping up, when there was a knock at the front door. You looked at each other as if to get the others permission to respond to the sound… The prospect of this being simply a neighborly visit or even another plea for help with a little food were slim… The way this day was going, you weren’t at all interested in having another altercation with a short sighted, demanding neighbor who felt entitled to share your preps. It was with great care that you walked to the front door, careful to not step on the spot of floor that always let out a loud creak. Slowly, you move closer until you could see out the peep hole…
